What Are the Diseases Associated with Sedentarism?

Having a sedentary lifestyle, simply means living with little or no physical activity. According to the World Health Organization, along with stacks of medical research, an inactive lifestyle can have very serious, negative effects on people’s health. It is responsible, indirectly, for about 2 million deaths every year – making it one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world.

A lack of physical activity increases the chances of death from all major medical conditions. It doubles the risk of obesity. That’s because when you consume calories but don’t burn them, your body converts that energy into fat – which, in turn, doubles your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Inactivity also increases the risk of colon cancer. Without your body moving around naturally, the colon cannot function as well as it should.

Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to other conditions. These include high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression and anxiety.

Statistics show that 60-85% of the world population don’t get enough physical exercise. So, it’s a very common problem. But it’s not a difficult problem to overcome. You don’t have to run marathons or become an Olympian to improve your physical fitness. Simply get up, get outside, and find something – anything to do that you can enjoy.
